Reviews of Up Close
 by Henriette Gyland

LASRIf you’re looking for a good page-turner, Up Close is for you. Ms. Gyland wasted no time in getting to the suspense. I’m a big fan of romantic suspense and this one reminded me a lot of some of the older classics of the genre written by Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt. I loved the setting and the author did such a good job describing it that I felt like I was there watching the scenes take place. If you like suspense novels set in England, and not necessary the big cities, this is one you might like to check out.
...After reading Up Close, I’m definitely looking forward to the author’s next book. If like me, you love curling up with a good book on a cold winter’s day, I say this one is a must read for you.

This book pulls you in from the start from the first chapter when you find yourself reading about Ivy's death as it's happening. The storyline swings back and between the present day to events that happened in the past that have had an impact on family dynamics, the more you read the more the clues fall into place but not without a twist or two to throw you off the track along the way.

If this is the sign of what we can expect from Henriette, I'm already looking forward to her next book, The Elephant Girl, which is due out in July 2013.

...The plot revolved around military issues; the impact of going to war and the after effects which had obviously been well researched by the author. There were other aspects woven into the plot too, which keeps the reader guessing and trying to put together the pieces to solve the mystery. The clues are there, some more subtle than others, together with a twist at the end. I don’t want to say much more for fear of spoiling the plot but for those who enjoy romance and suspense, this is one I’d highly recommend and will certainly look out for future novels by this author.

I started reading UP CLOSE and was instantly drawn in by the suspense, mystery and intrigue. This book is very suspenseful and has a very quick pace which is a great thing for a reader. And, to make things even better, there is a romance on top of all of the mystery and it will definitely leave you wondering until the very last minute whether or not Aidan can be trusted. It seems like there is literally a secret on every page and each of the characters has their own demons to conquer, which makes the book that much more entertaining. Overall, this was a fast paced read that I enjoyed very much.

...This is romantic suspense at its best. The tension mounts slowly, but inexorably and the scary parts are very creepy indeed. I read this book in a couple of days (which is pretty fast for me) and really enjoyed it. I don’t think I’ll be able to look at the sea in the same way again.

A fantastic romantic thriller.

NewBooks Magazine...There seems to be a mystery surrounding her grandmother's death, one enhanced by the prologue to the novel with its sinister overtones. Lia is drawn into this, and also recalls a tragedy from her childhood, which had become a buried memory. Nevertheless, she overcomes her fear of water to allow Aidan to teach her to dive. Inevitably their relationship strengthens, and when Brett travels from the States to join her for Christmas, it is clear that their engagement has come to an end.
Strange events cause Lia to distrust everyone, and the writer cleverly provides twists and turns to the plot that make it difficult for the reader to discern the truth.
This is an interesting and well-written romantic crime story that has an enjoyable, if inevitable conclusion

Up Close is a chilling story that literally sent a shiver or two down my spine. It's a complex story, with a cast of characters that are not to be trusted, who have back-stories that interleave together to create a quite unexpected conclusion.  Lia and Aiden are complicated characters who at first fight against their attraction to each other, hurting each other in the process. There is real passion in this story, not just the blossoming romance, but also the passion felt by the characters for what they believe in - there is also an undercurrent of hate running through the book - terrible deeds carried out in the past that have shaped the characters and their futures.
This is a clever and gripping read - with a twist.

There were plenty of twists and turns, and I was deliriously happy for the ’penny to drop’ for me late in bed one night when I eventually realised who the killer was and all the small hints and clues fell into place not that I found the book in any way predictable, as I had already decided about four times who had murdered poor Ivy! I got there in the end and it made for a very satisfying read!

I really enjoyed this book. It starts off gently and soon picks up pace pushing the reader into a story with surprises around every corner. It is quite a dark novel full of mystery and there were a number of events which I had not been expecting at all. The descriptions of Norfolk and the various settings were really evocative with effective use of the sea and weather adding to the tension and more sinister side of the plot. I'm looking forward to reading Henriette Gyland's next book.

lovereadingLots of drama in this exciting Norfolk-based romance with possible murder, damaged people and family secrets to the fore. It is Nora Roberts territory and it's a good one.

...When it does get into the mystery, it's a good one. This is hard to say with a mystery as I must be careful not to reveal too much... The ending. I saw one twist coming from the moment the heroine almost hit a man in the street... BUT I was convinced someone else had done the crimes and was still surprised. There was also a paternity issues I wasn't quite sure of, and I love to be kept guessing so I liked that too.
